Steps to create this course...

Creating Wikipost types and Course Texts[edit]

  • Currently, set up with templates for student pages, project/wikipost pages, rubric/feedback pages & resource pages. Browse categories Special:Categories to see all. (Student pages and feedback pages are hidden.) There is no default form for totally new pages. (This is because you have to pre-login private users anyways, so you should create their profile pages.)
  • To customize for a course, decide if you want more info on Student pages (including grade info!), what you want on wikiposts (I have 3 types in this wiki) and what rubrics you're using on feedback pages.
  • If you're starting out with a library of shared Course Texts, you need to add them, and add copies (with their unique copycodes):
    • Upload CT cover images - I use the 'large email' size in Office's Picture Manager, which gives heights of 314 pixels. Special:MultipleUpload
    • Then, enter info of text:

      • if you enter "ISBN XXXX" into any freetext, wiki sees it and autolinks it to amazon & others...)
    • Then, define # of copies for each CText and their 'copy code' to keep track of each:

Adding Students[edit]

  1. Whether public or private, you need to 'set up' profile pages for students. (So their links work.) Use this form to add students to the course, 'First Last' format separated by commas:

(What this will do is just autocreate pages with those pagenames, in the 'Student' category. This will mean that they will have the default 'Edit a Student' form so when students log in with the matching name, their "My page" link works and they can edit their info without getting an inappropriate form.) You can find the list at the Class List page.

  1. If the wiki is set to private, you need to create user accounts. (If public, anyone can create an account.)
  • Go to 'admin links', create new user (using same usernames as you created above!); give username & temp pass; use email to send confirmation.
  1. Then, to students: conf email may be marked junk! Has temp password in it; click link & log in with name & password. Directs you to immediately enter new password. Then all should work.

"Invisible" changes[edit]

List of changes made to unobvious places...

label.checkboxLabel {
width: 200px;
display: block;
float: left;
}

label.radioButtonItem {
width: 200px;
display: block;
float: left;
}

#ca-talk { display:none!important; }
#ca-nstab-main { display:none!important; }
#ca-nstab-user { display:none!important; }
  • made some categories (ct copies, feedbacks) invisible to users - used "__HIDDENCAT__" in category page

Exporting the site[edit]

Full export[edit]

  • go to Special:Export, add all possible namespaces. Exports file that you can import into new site.

Partial (student-data-less) export: trickier.[edit]

Add these to your list:

  • Widget (for DISQUS)
  • Form
  • Property
  • Category
    • (only takes category homepages, not category contents)
  • Template
  • File (only copies pages, not the actual files)
  • MediaWiki
    • (includes 'Common', plus sidebar & mainpage (which on this site is a redirect!)
    • delete mainpage? (If you want a 'landing page' to intro the site for observers)
  • Category names to take content in categories:
    • CT copies
    • CourseTexts
    • Course Info‏‎
    • K-Concepts‏‎
    • Resources‏‎
  • Other special noncategory pages (like this one?)
    • Get "Class List" to make ReplaceText scrub easier.
    • Need the real home page: "Welcome_to_the_Phil_310/HonP301_course_website!"
    • Need redirects (esp. Concept redirects.) Search for "REDIRECT", cut to word and delete frass, copy to export. (Because redirects are categoryless.)
  • edit sidebar, kbt disqus... anything else to fix references?

Scrubbing procedure[edit]

When you have the wiki all set/copied with the content you want... but student IDs still exist...

  • Replacetext all names to temporary pseudos.
  • Export that (w/o revision history!) to a 2nd site.
  • Rinse & repeat to 3rd site, so name changes are from temp pseudo to final pseudo. (Otherwise, the last revision is the name change and original names are visible.)
  • 3rd site is target site.

  • Now, have to upload all actual files! Stupid so far: have to find AllFiles list here, then Multiple Upload onto the new site - no automated import like for wikipages.
